Anesthesia and Recovery

Most plastic surgery operations can be performed safely under Local Anesthesia with Intravenous Sedation administered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Lower body work such as abdominoplasty is usually performed under Epidural Anesthesia. I work with the same anesthesiologist every day in a private surgical center, meeting the highest standards of safety required by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).

Patients having facelift, breast reduction, abdominoplasty and body sculpting are taken care of post-operatively by one of my Private Duty Nurses for 24 - 48 hrs who are trained in monitoring your recovery and assisting in a rapid recovery. Most patients from outside the United States remain in New York for 10 - 14 days and are constantly attended to by my office staff. Eyelids, noses, liposuction, breasts usually remain about 1 week.

What you can expect from some of the surgical procedures I do

Nose (Rhinoplasty)

Local anesthesia, average time 1 hr. Usually no external scars, no packing, minimal bruising and swelling, minimal pain. 1-week recovery. I do not perform same operation on every patient. The nose should fit the face and be pleasing to the patient.
"A good rhinoplasty refines the nose but the patient should look like they were born with that nose".

Eyelids (Blepharoplasty)

Local anesthesia, average time 1 hr, recovery 1 week, some swelling and bruising usually resolves in 1 week. Minimal or no pain. Invisible scars. Size, shape, expression of eyes remains the same - natural. Longevity 15 - 20 years.

Facelift

21st century facelifts have shorter scars and quicker recovery time. Surgery is often combined with fat grafting and fillers and skin rejuvenation with peels and lasers. Local anesthesia, average time 2 1/2 hrs, recovery 10 -14 days, usually minimal bruising and swelling, moderate pain for several days, invisible scars. Patients look rested, fresher, younger, often like they lost weight, but totally natural. A well performed face and neck lift usually lasts 10 -12 years or longer.

Liposuction

Most popular cosmetic operation. Recontour hips, thighs, knees, abdomen, neck and arms. Local anesthesia or epidural. Average time 1 - 2 hrs. Moderate - bruising and swelling, minimal to moderate pain. Recovery 1 week, weight must be maintained or gaining will deposit fat in other areas.

Breasts and Body

Implants, lifting, reduction. Local anesthesia. Average time 1-2 hrs. Moderate pain. Recovery -1 week. Body sculpting: abdomen, arms, thighs. Local or epidural anesthesia. Average time 1 2 1/2 hrs. Recovery -1 week - 10 days.

Fillers, Botox, Fat Grafting

Most common cosmetic procedures. Often done in combination with facial surgery.

Skin Rejuvenation

Peels, laser, dermabrasion. To improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles and sun damage. Often performed at same time as Facelift or Eyelid Surgery.

Combination Procedures

Very often patients inquire about surgery on several areas. Commonly combined procedures are facelift and eyelidplasty with breast reduction or lifting or abdominoplasty and liposuction. I operate very efficiently and can usually keep these combined procedures to less then 5 hours of surgery. Because general anesthesia is not used and the operating time is less than 6 hours, the risks and possible complications are minimized. The advantages of doing combined procedure when possible are one anesthesia and one recovery period. This means less down time, and less anesthesia.
